Overview
The pain of appendicitis often starts around the navel and moves to the lower right side of the abdomen over several hours. If treatment is delayed, the inflamed appendix can burst and spread infection inside the abdomen.
Treatment
Diagnosis is based on examination, blood tests and often an ultrasound or CT scan. The usual treatment is an operation to remove the appendix (appendicectomy), which can often be performed laparoscopically.
Common symptoms
- Pain that starts around the navel and moves to the lower right abdomen
- Pain that gets worse when walking, coughing or pressing on the area
- Loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting
- Mild fever
When to see a doctor
- Abdominal pain that started suddenly and keeps getting worse (go to an emergency department)
- Severe pain with fever, or a hard and tender abdomen
If you have severe pain, vomiting, fever or heavy bleeding, go to the nearest emergency department.
