Paraumbilical Hernia (IPOM Mesh Repair)

A hernia just above or beside the navel. Dr. Sohel-Uzzaman treats it with laparoscopic IPOM (intraperitoneal onlay mesh) repair.

Paraumbilical Hernia (IPOM Mesh Repair)

Overview

A paraumbilical hernia develops through a weak spot in the midline of the abdomen close to the navel. It is more common in people with excess weight, in women after childbirth and in people who strain for long periods.

IPOM mesh repair

IPOM (intraperitoneal onlay mesh) repair is done laparoscopically. The contents of the hernia are returned to the abdomen, the gap is closed where appropriate, and a special mesh is fixed to the inner side of the abdominal wall to strengthen it.

Common symptoms

  • A swelling at or just above the navel
  • Pain or a pulling feeling around the navel, especially when coughing or lifting
  • The swelling is easier to see when standing

When to see a doctor

  • The swelling keeps getting bigger
  • Sudden severe pain, vomiting, or a swelling that will not go back in (seek emergency care)

If you have severe pain, vomiting, fever or heavy bleeding, go to the nearest emergency department.
